History of Blue Hogs Racing
Blue Hogs Racing was started by Jim Donaldson of the Covington Police Dept. 2002. The idea being that cops are human and being so are inherently lazy. As a whole police officers are known for being fat donut eaters. We are known as grumpy, mean authority figures who in general just do not like people. The plan was to change this ideal of the police. The goal first and for most was to get us into shape so that we were not dying of heart attacks at age 46. The daily stress of the job is enough to make most people insane but if you add on that the idea of driving around for 8 hours eating fast food and drinking Mt. Dew, you can really do some damage. So, being already a runner Jim did what he could to run 5ks, 10ks, and eventually the Marathons. He was able to slowly but surely recruit other officers to run with him. Before long, and with the help of Doug Pelfrey formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals and currently Kicks for Kids, Blue Hogs Racing was a non profit organization that found itself receiving donations from large corporations and then taking that money and doing such things as buying 12 computers for the Alternative School in Covington and driving truck loads of food to the Boys and Girls Club in Cincinnati. Before long the organization was too big for one person to handle. Along the way Jim had taken several people such as Jess Hamblin and Myself, Bill Conrad and turned us from the sluggish oafs that we were into running machine ( Running Machines - term to be used lightly). We were in the same boat as others in our profession. We drove around eating bad and not getting any exercise at all. This began to catch up to us. Our nature as Covington Police to GO, GO, GO, chase the bad guys and never say die. Unfortunately the Big Macs and Whoppers had caught up. Speaking for myself only, I could not run more than about a block before I felt like dying. This had to change. Jess and I began running at night and then the competitive nature took over. The 1 mile runs became 2 and then 3 and then in the summer of 2004 it happened. On a dare we were scheduled to run half of the Flying Pig Marathon. About a month before the race it was decided that we would just do it all. I can say that the race was not only the hardest, most challenging and damaging single event I have ever participated in, but it was also the most rewarding. From that day on we have been working to reestablish Blue Hogs Racing to its once Goliath status. It is now 7/19/05 and to show how well it is going we have 4 officers who are planning to go Athens Greece and run the original Marathon along the original path in November 2006. Any and all who wish to join Blue Hogs Racing are welcome. The only requirement is that you are a Public Safety Officer (Police, Fire, Sheriff, etc.) or a family member thereof. Thank you for your time and Race Hard.
